What is a crown?

If you've ever sat in a dental chair and wondered - 'what is a crown?' - this post is for you!

A crown is a dental restoration that in many cases is intended to provide enhanced strength and esthetics when compared to fillings. A crown (sometimes called a 'cap') typically covers the surfaces of the tooth above the gums. In the process of making the crown, some tooth structure is removed to allow for appropriate thickness of the material.

There are several materials that your dentist can choose from when treatment planning a crown, some of which are gold, metal, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, zirconia, composite, acrylic, etc. Each material may have its own advantages and disadvantages - your dentist will discuss which material is best suited for your specific oral health.

Dr. Hollingdale has a keen interest in dental materials and loves to provide patient specific recommendations. If you're in the Stittsville area and think you need a crown, schedule your exam today to discuss your options.
